What is Drafting? Drafting is a term that refers to creating technical drawings that communicate how something is constructed or functions. Someone who is skilled in drafting is called a draftsman or draftsperson. Residential drafting is the creation of drawings or plans for the purpose of residential home construction, room addition, and larger remodeling projects such as finished basements, bonus room completions, etc.
In drafting, objects are drawn to scale. Multiple drawings are made to create a drawing package also known as house plans. A drawing packages usually include elevation views, floor plans, foundation plans, and roof plans. Additionally, interior elevations, section views, and electrical drawings can be provided to show additional details and features. House plans are very detailed, and can be used for obtaining quotes from builders, getting building permits, and ultimately used as working plans for the construction of the structure.
Floor plans are drawings show what the floor would look like if looking down from above with the roof or upper floors are removed. Floor plans show the configuration and dimensions of the rooms, the size and location of windows and doors, and the location of kitchen, bath, other important features. Floor plans are sometimes called plan views.
Elevation views show the front, sides, and rear of the structure as it would appear from the outside. Elevations views are great for seeing how various roof lines and pitch, window/door sizes and locations, decorative features, etc. will affect the appearance of the structure.
Floor plans and elevation views make up what is called a preliminary drawing package for the homeowner to review. This is the point in the project where there are typically multiple iterations of changes requested and drawings revised to fine tune the house plans to exactly what the homeowner desires.
After the preliminary plans are approved, additional details are added to the floor plans and elevations and the additional drawings for foundation plan, roof plan, and other drawings as requested are created to form the final complete drawing package known as the working plans or house plans. It is still possible for changes to be made at any point in the project, however the more mature the drawings package is, the more involved and costly the requested changes might be.
